Local Attractions and Island Activities Near the Ship Harbor Inn
Fidalgo Island is often called the "Gateway to the San Juan Islands," but it is much more than that. Rather than considering Anacortes just a stop along the way, choose to stay here and experience the "too numerous to mention" activities Anacortes and Fidalgo Island offers.
Anacortes, Washington Area Information
Whether you are a hiker or biker, you will enjoy 3,000 acres of community forest lands, 20 miles of hiking/biking trails, local Washington Park with 220 acres facing Rosario Strait and nearby Deception Pass Bridge and State Park. Don't worry if you forgot to bring your own bike, you can rent one at the local bike shop.
If you are a water enthusiast, the area offers five full-service marinas and three public boat launches. There are several local companies that offer kayak rentals or kayak tours with a biologist or naturalist as a guide, as well as whale watching cruises, yacht charters and charters available for scuba diving (lessons available) or sport fishing. Rosario Beach, at the southern end of Fidalgo Island, is a great spot for exploring tide pools, taking a ½-mile hike along the beach or scuba diving offshore to an underwater park. For a slower pace, try fishing at one of the island's six lakes, including Pass Lake, which doesn't allow motorboats.
Just want to relax while you're here? Browse through the many wonderful antique malls, specialty shops, art galleries or maritime museums. Take a quiet moment to enjoy coffee and dessert at a quaint sidewalk café or stop in the local candy store to choose an assortment of handmade chocolates to savor while walking along historic downtown. On a clear day, grab a picnic lunch and drive to the top of Mt. Erie with its scenic panoramic view of the San Juan Islands, or Cap Sante lookout and the nearly 360° view that includes spectacular snow-capped Mount Baker. Take a daytrip to one of the nearby San Juan Islands or just unwind and ride through the islands aboard the state ferry.
